Wimbledon on TV in Britain and Around the World
Wimbledon is the oldest of the four majors and the only one still played on grass, at the All England Club in south-west London. The Championships begin at the end of June or in the first days of July and last two weeks, with the Ladies' and Gentlemen's singles finals on the last weekend. Centre Court and No. 1 Court have retractable roofs, so rain no longer wipes out the main matches.
For British viewers it is the easiest Slam of the year: the BBC shows every day free-to-air, with live courts on BBC iPlayer. Japan has a similar mix, with NHK free alongside WOWOW, and Nine shows the fortnight free in Australia while Stan Sport streams it. In the US, ESPN holds the rights and Tennis Channel adds coverage.
Across continental Europe the picture is more scattered than for any other Slam. Germany watches on Prime Video, Spain on Movistar Plus+, Italy on Sky Sport and NOW, France on beIN Sports, Poland on Polsat Sport, Turkey on S Sport and the Netherlands on Eurosport. Star Sports and JioHotstar carry it in India, SPOTV NOW streams it in much of Southeast Asia, and SuperSport has the grass-court major across Africa.
There are no night sessions in London, so the timing is the same every day: mornings in the Americas, afternoons in Africa and evenings in India. The grass weeks that lead into the Championships are covered on our WTA Tour and ATP Tour pages.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Wimbledon free to watch in the UK?
Yes. The BBC shows every day of the Championships free-to-air on its TV channels, and BBC iPlayer streams live matches from several courts at once. No sports subscription is needed, which makes Wimbledon the one Grand Slam that British fans can follow in full on free TV.
What channel is Wimbledon on in the US?
ESPN has Wimbledon in the US, and its streaming service carries the courts that don't make the TV channels. Tennis Channel also has coverage. Centre Court play starts at 8:30am Eastern and 5:30am Pacific, so most of the day's big matches air during the American morning.
How do I watch Wimbledon in India?
Star Sports is the Wimbledon broadcaster in India, with JioHotstar as its streaming home. London is four and a half hours behind India in summer, so Centre Court starts at 6pm Indian time and late finishes under the roof can run well past midnight.
Where can I stream Wimbledon in Germany?
Prime Video has Wimbledon in Germany, so German fans follow the grass-court Slam through a Prime Video subscription, in a browser, on mobile or on a television. Germany is one hour ahead of London, which puts the start on the outside courts at noon local time and Centre Court at 2:30pm.
Is Wimbledon on TV in Nigeria and Kenya?
Yes. SuperSport has Wimbledon from Nigeria and Ghana in the west to Kenya and Tanzania in the east, and DStv Stream puts Centre Court on your phone. Nigeria shares London's clock during the Championships and Kenya is two hours ahead, so play runs through the West African afternoon and the East African evening.
When does Wimbledon take place?
Wimbledon runs for two weeks from late June into mid-July. Qualifying is held the week before at Roehampton, and grass-court events in Britain, Germany, the Netherlands and Spain fill the weeks between Roland-Garros and the Championships, giving players a short run-in on the surface.
Which countries show Wimbledon free-to-air?
The BBC in the UK, NHK in Japan, Nine in Australia, DR in Denmark, RTS in Serbia, FBC TV in Fiji, TDM in Macau and Switzerland's SRF, RTS and RSI all show Wimbledon free. Note that RTS in Serbia and RTS in Switzerland are two different broadcasters.
What time does Wimbledon start each day?
Outside courts start at 11am London time, No. 1 Court at 1pm and Centre Court at 1:30pm. There is no separate night session, but matches under the roofs can carry on until 11pm. For viewers abroad, Centre Court begins at 5:30am in Los Angeles, 3:30pm in Nairobi and 6pm in Delhi.
Can I watch the BBC's Wimbledon coverage from outside the UK?
BBC iPlayer streams only to viewers in the UK, so it stops working when you travel. If you live in Britain and are abroad during the Championships, a VPN with UK servers can bring iPlayer back. Our VPN page shows which providers list BBC iPlayer among the services they support.
