How the World Watches American Football
American football on this page means the NFL, the league that sets the calendar for the whole sport. Preseason games fill August, the regular season runs from September into early January, the playoffs take over in January and the Super Bowl closes the year in February. Between March and July the headlines are about the draft and free agency rather than live games.
The game now has a real audience far from North America. Mexico has followed the NFL on Televisa, TV Azteca, ESPN and FOX for decades, and Brazil watches on TV Globo and ESPN. In Europe, RTL gives German, Austrian and Swiss fans the prime-time games free, while France, Spain, Ireland and the UK each have at least one free channel showing selected games next to the pay services.
The league goes to the fans as well. London has hosted regular-season games since 2007, and the 2026 schedule sends a record nine games abroad, with stops that include Melbourne, Rio de Janeiro, Paris, Madrid, Munich and Mexico City. For everyone else, DAZN is the common thread: it streams NFL Game Pass almost everywhere, while ESPN covers Africa, Latin America and Australia, and beIN Sports and TOD carry the season in the Middle East.
Frequently Asked Questions
When is American football season?
The NFL season starts in early September and ends with the Super Bowl in February. In the 2026 season, the opening game was played on September 9, the last regular-season Sunday is January 10, 2027, and Super Bowl LXI follows on February 14. August brings preseason games, and spring and early summer are the quiet months.
How long does an American football game last on TV?
Plan for a little over three hours. The clock runs for 60 minutes in four 15-minute quarters, but it stops for incomplete passes, timeouts, replay reviews and commercial breaks. In the regular season, a tied game goes to a 10-minute overtime period, so the occasional broadcast runs closer to four hours.
Is American football on free TV in Europe?
In several countries, yes. RTL shows the prime-time NFL games free in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, with an extra Sunday game on RTL+. In France, L'Équipe and France Télévisions share free games, and Cuatro has selected games in Spain. The UK's 5 has two Sunday games every week, and in Ireland Virgin Media Television covers a Sunday game, the playoffs and the Super Bowl.
Can I watch American football in Spanish?
Yes, in many places. In the US, Telemundo carries games in Spanish free over the air. Mexico has the widest choice, with Televisa and TV Azteca airing selected games free and more on ESPN, FOX and ViX. Across the rest of Latin America, ESPN shows the season in Spanish with streams on Disney+, and in Spain the games are on Cuatro and DAZN.
How do fans in Brazil watch American football?
TV Globo and ESPN split the weekly games, with Globo's free broadcasts also streaming on Globoplay and ESPN's on Disney+. SporTV has coverage too, Netflix streams its holiday games and DAZN sells NFL Game Pass for anyone who wants the full schedule. The 2026 season even brought a regular-season game to the Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro, on September 27.
Which streaming service shows the most American football?
DAZN, by a distance. It sells NFL Game Pass in 219 countries, which is every one outside the US and China, with every game live. Disney+ comes next, streaming ESPN's NFL coverage in about 20 countries, mostly in Latin America, plus Brazil and Australia. In the Arab world, TOD is the streaming home of the season.
How do fans in Africa follow American football?
ESPN shows NFL games south of the Sahara, from Lagos and Accra to Nairobi and Johannesburg, and DAZN streams every game through NFL Game Pass. North African and Gulf fans watch on beIN Sports and TOD. US Sunday afternoon games land in the evening in West and East Africa, which makes them easy to catch live.
Where are NFL games played outside the US in 2026?
The league scheduled a record nine international games. They include the first regular-season game in Australia, at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on September 11, a game at the Maracanã, two at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, France's first at the Stade de France on October 25, the Bernabéu in Madrid on November 8, Munich's Allianz Arena on November 15 and the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on November 22.
How can I watch American football from home while abroad?
Your streaming app follows your location, so a German, British or Mexican subscription may not load on vacation. Connect to a VPN server in the country where you subscribed and the games stream as normal again. NordVPN covers up to 10 devices on one account, enough for a phone, a laptop and the TV in your hotel room.
